An alleged thief and two people who chased him into a river in the Amilengbe area of Kwara State are yet to be found four days after the incident.
Witnesses told Daily Trust that the incident happened on Saturday around 12pm when they saw two men pursuing the supposed thief who jumped into the river to escape being caught.
A witness said, “It was the shout of ‘thief’, ‘thief’ that drew the attention of some of the people who gathered at a welder’s workshop close to the river.
“Suddenly, the alleged thief jumped into the river and started swimming and the two people that were chasing him jumped in after him.
“But after a while, we didn’t see any of them. We became agitated after more than 30 minutes before we informed officials of the state fire service.”
When contacted, the spokesman of the fire service, Hassan Adekunle, said, “We learnt the suspect stole from traders in Amilengbe and that while being pursued he jumped into the river when he got to the bridge and two people jumped in after him. But up till now after several hours of search we have not seen any of them.”
