Just like everything in life, consuming caffeine has both its good and bad sides. As much as caffeine intake is important, overdoing it may have severe long term side effects. Mrs. Tabitha Oyelade, a dietician with Centenary Hospital Lagos, states that caffeine consumption is rampant and almost inevitable, as most beverages have caffeine components; therefore, it is next to impossible to completely avoid caffeine. She however highlights on the good and bad sides.

The good

•   Caffeine boosts your physical and mental performance. Caffeine increases adrenaline levels in your blood. It helps you focus and stay alert. Moderate caffeine intake, one to six cups a day, helps you focused and improves your mental alertness.

•   Caffeine may help you lose weight. It contains minerals like magnesium and potassium which help the human body use insulin, regulates blood sugar levels and reduces your craving for sugary treats and snacks. 

•   Caffeine protects your brain. High caffeine levels in your blood reduce the risk of Alzheimer disease. It also lowers risk of dementia.

•   Caffeine brightens your mood, helps fight depression and lowers risk of suicide. Caffeine stimulates the central nervous system and boosts production of neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine, and noradrenaline, which elevate your mood. 

The bad

•   Caffeine can be toxic. Bad quality coffee can have a lot of impurities in it, which can cause sickness, headache or a general bad feeling. 

•   Too much caffeine intake can cause insomnia and restlessness, leading to heart diseases and brain damage.

•   Consuming caffeine during pregnancy is really risky and can cause complications.

Caffeine in some cases can increase your blood pressure.
