The Brief: Plateau killings; Ekiti roadblock; Taliban Afghanistan

In the wake of the Rukuba Road killings, Plateau government imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew, then expanded it to 24 hours to forestall violence. Crack of gunshots sent residents of Jos fleeing in different directions by Sunday evening. So what is going on behind the curfew?

Ilasa Ekiti ground to a halt in protests on Sunday cutting off travellers from Lagos, Abuja, Ibadan. The protests were against the relocation of Ekiti south council headquarters.

The Taliban has been relentless in its pursuit to take Afghanistan. On Sunday it closed in on the capital Kabul, sending diplomatic missions to evacuate their staff and the president fleeing.

5 killed, 5 injured in fresh Kaduna attack

Five people were reportedly killed, another five injured in an attack on Madamai community in Kaura Local Government Area of Kaduna State Sunday, Daily Trust gathered.

An eyewitness, who escaped with gunshots, Emmanuel Nache, told Daily Trust that the attackers invaded their community in numbers around 5:00 am and started shooting sporadically.

Afghan president flees as Taliban closes in

N17.6b lost to tax evasion in 2015

The Senate has said that Nigeria lost N17.6bn to tax evasion in 2015. The unrecovered taxes, it said, were made up of Value Added Tax (VAT), Company Income Tax (CIT), Withholding Tax (WHT), Education Tax (EDT) and NITDEF.

Plateau killings survivors speak of rescue by tricycle operators, soldiers 

Some of the survivors of Saturday’s attack on Fulani travellers around Gada-Biyu – Rukuba road in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State, Sunday narrated how security agents and other good Samaritans rescued them from the mob.

Their accounts came as new tally shows that 27 of the travellers were killed in the carnage, which has drawn outrage and condemnation.
