Terrorists raze Kareto, kill 13 loggers in Damboa

Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have killed at least 13 loggers in Damboa and burnt down the ancient town of Kareto in Borno State.

The two separate attacks by the suspected terrorists occurred at the weekend.

In Kareto town, the newly reconstructed houses by the state government for Internally Displaced Persons IDPs were burnt down on Friday.

A source said the incident occurred a few days after the resettlement committee saddled with the responsibility of resettling displaced persons back to their ancestral home visited and cleaned the whole town in preparation for the return of IDPs.

Kareto in Mobar LGA is the home town of first elected Borno governor, Late Mohammed Goni.

In the second incident, the loggers were attacked and killed in the northern part of Damboa on Friday about 11:30am around Chafa general area of Damboa LGA.

A member of vigilante group, Abakar Damboa, disclosed that victims were the displaced persons from central IDP camp  who went to fell firewood.

He said the deceased were buried after Jum’aat prayers on Friday.

“The incident happened around noon on Friday and the corpses were brought and prayed for at District Head’s house after Jum’at prayers on Friday.

They have been buried according to Islamic rites,” said Abakar. The Kareto and Damboa attacks were overshadowed by the rice field killing in Zabarmari town which was greeted by wide condemnation.
