At least six traders were killed when terrorists opened fire on more than 20 vehicles in a convoy of traders in Katsina State.
The terrorists attacked the vehicles that were going to a weekly market from Mai Dabino town to Yantumaki in Danmusa local government of Katsina.
The incident happened Friday morning, when the people left Mai Dabino town on their way to go Yantumaki with military escort.
One of the victims who did not want his name mentioned said people in the area have only one day every week to move out of their villages and that security officers had to accompany them to purchase their basic needs in Yantumaki town where the market opens every Friday.
One of the drivers who came under attack told newsmen that some of the cars they were driving were burnt and many of the passengers, including women and children, sustained injuries while fleeing the attack.
“We saw them suddenly on about 20 motorcycles in front of us. When some of us attempted to return back, they saw others on foot behind us. They surrounded us and just opened fire,” he said.
He added that he could not ascertain whether some were kidnapped as many had scampered into the bush for their safety.
He said a soldier among those accompanying the traders sustained gunshot injury and was rushed to the hospital.
Police spokesman, ASP Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu, could not be reached for comment at the time of filing this report.
