Tension in Zuba as butchers, Koro natives clash

There was tension in Zuba, following a clash between butchers from the Hausa community and Koro people of the area.

City News gathered that the dispute started from the venue of a football match on Friday, where the two sides participated in the final of a soccer contest.

Six butchers were allegedly beaten up during the match after they were said to have been caught smoking what was suspected to be Indian hemp, within the football field.

A witness, who spoke to City News on Wednesday, said five of the butchers attacked were hospitalised as a result of injuries they sustained from the incident.

“The butchers had expected to see sanction against the culprits from the traditional institution of the town, but as that was not forthcoming, they allegedly decided to retaliate on Sunday.

“Some natives were attacked inside a night club,” the source further said.

Our reporter further learnt that the tension in the town led to another attack on Tuesday.

A Koro woman hawking raw groundnut kept the commodity close to a suya spot against the Hausa man’s consent.

“He threw the groundnut away and that annoyed her people, and they descended on him and later went on rampage attacking others,” the source further said.

The Zuba Divisional Police Officer (DPO), CSP Muhammad Yahaya, said two people – the suya man, and a son of the groundnut seller who allegedly rallied his kinsmen for Tuesday’s unrest – were arrested.

He, however, said the woman’s son was not taken to the police station as he was retrieved from the police by his people before getting there.

Another source told our reporter that four persons from the rampaging youths sustained injuries when they attempted to storm the butchers’ market during Tuesday’s incident.

A reinforcement of the police was later dispatched to patrol the streets of the town.
