Kidnappers and armed men have taken over the boundary road between Uturu in Isiukwiato local government area of Abia state and Okigwe local government of lmo state.

Daily Trust investigation revealed that there is hardly any day that men of underworld do not kidnap, maim or kill people along the road.

Between December and January, about 25 persons were kidnapped, while about five were killed, despite two security checkpoints.

Residents of Uturu Community have expressed concerns over state of killings and kidnappings along Okigwe-Uturu road.

President General of Uturu community, Chief Chidi Uturu Ogbaegbe, who spoke to our correspondent, said the perpetrators of the heinous act take advantage of a dilapidated spot along Ihube-Okigwe Road.

He said, “The situation along this road that links Imo with the Abia state, especially the Abia State University, is one that has been giving us serious concern.”

“The road has become almost impassable because of the activities of kidnappers and murderers . It’s no longer safe for students and members of the University community to go to Imo State. In fact, anybody travelling through that road always have their hearts in their hands because you are not sure to come back alive.”

Ogbaegbe expressed regrets such was happening despite many checkpoints along the busy road.

He called on law enforcement agencies to ensure that the road is made safe for the travelling public.

Also speaking to Daily Trust on the condition of anonymity, a student of Abia State University Uturu, who lives in Okigwe, Imo, said studying in the university is now a threat.

“My worry now is that both limo and Abia states government are not showing interesting to ensuring that the insecurity will end. We cannot go to school often because of threat to life. I am calling on the two state government to intervene and save the ugly situation,” he said
