Details of how he slipped into the river remain sketchy, however, residents gathered at the riverside to watch as local divers went into the water in search of the teenager.
“He was asked to go and dump some refuse but ended up falling into the river. We don’t know how it happened but we are hoping to find his body,” a resident told Daily Trust.
It was also gathered that a pair of slippers believed to belong to the victim was retrieved from the river.
Confirming the incident, the Village Head of Haying Bello, Alhaji Ibrahim Fagge, said the victim drowned in a nearby community but people followed the river to the Hayin Bello community hoping to retrieve the body.
He urged parents to stop sending their children close to the river because it is not safe.
