Teen arrested for stoning neighbour in eye

An 18-year-old teenager, Ugochukwu Obi, has been arrested by the police for allegedly throwing a stone at his neighbor and injuring him in the eye.

The accused was said to have engaged in a fight with the wife of the victim, before he later turned on the man.

The wife of the victim, Maureen Casmir, said she took her phone for charging at a neighbour’s compound at Unguwar Dabiri in Tungan-Maje Abuja, where they both reside last Sunday afternoon.

“I took my phone to Ugochukwu’s compound on that very day. About two hours later I sent for the phone, unfortunately I discovered that the battery was even lower than how it was before I took it there. So I went to the compound to ask the woman I gave the phone to what happened, because that was the second time I was experiencing such.

“She responded that she did not know what happened. Then I said, who is the stupid person that is doing this to me. That was when the boy came in and confronted me. We started quarrelling and some people intervened. Thereafter, I left for my compound.

“All of a sudden, one of my sons came back home crying, and when I enquired what happened, he told me that the mother of the accused person had beaten him. My husband was not at home at the time, but when he came back and heard about it, he went to the compound of the boy to ask what happened, only for the boy to attack him,” she added.

Also speaking to our reporter, father of the accused boy, Mr. Obi Chibirike, expressed sadness over the incident. He confirmed that his son, who is now in police custody, was the one that hit his neighbour, Mr. Michael Casmir, in the eye.

He, however, said he took Casmir to a clinic where he was charged N20, 000, after which he was referred to the Abuja University Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada.

“I was with them all the while. The hospital said that the eyes were already damaged and had to be removed through surgery, which would cost over N100,000, in addition to drugs.

“I took the boy to the police when he appeared the next day, though the man said he had forgiven him.  I know the police are doing their job’’, he said.

When contacted, the Divisional Police Officer of Zuba, CSP Badewole Bola, confirmed the incident, adding that accused person would be taken to court for prosecution once investigation is completed.
