Team Nigeria wins CAA Zone 2 Championships in style

Team Nigeria has won 13 gold, four silver and one bronze medal to finish first at the just concluded Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) zone 2 Senior Athletics Championships in Ghana.

According to the final medals table, the hosts finished second with eight gold, nine silver and six bronze while Burkina Faso ended in their place with eight gold, six silver and four bronze medals.

The president of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Tonobok Okowa, technical director Samuel Onikeku, former president Chief Solomon Ogba and AFN board member representing South West Zone Dr. Solomon Alao all expressed their satisfaction with the athletes’ showings in Ghana.

Okowa said “Nigeria’s athletics will offer more to the world if encouragement comes from all and sundry to assist them.

“I am elated and proud of our young athletes. As a federation, we would continue to try our best to encourage the athletes to see them succeed”.

The highlights of the performance yesterday night was in women’s Mixed 4×400 Relay which Nigeria picked gold after the quartet completely outpaced their closest rivals Ghana.

Nigeria’s emerging Javelin thrower Kure kept spectators shouting when he won the gold after throwing 70.23m. 

Speaking of his massive victory, Kure said, “There is more in the tank.”

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s contingent will return home today to face another Athletics Trials in Benin-City in a week’s time in continuation of the Paris Olympic Games preparations.
