Teaching kids to be appreciative

Ungratefulness and discontentment is a terrible thing; especially for a kid. Kids have to be taught how to be thankful and grateful for what they have, what they are given and what they own. It’s said that “if we are thankful for what we are given, we’ll receive more.” Therefore, children must be taught to be appreciative of what they already have, while hoping for more. Here are a few pointers on how to raise appreciative kids:

Teach them to say ‘thank you’: By saying thank you, it shows that you appreciate what they have been given. Ensure that they say thank you when they are given gifts or compliments. If they don’t say thank you, take back what they have been given.

Teach them contentment: Make the kids understand that they are blessed to have all that they have. Explain to them to be happy and content with what they already have, as not many are fortunate to have the same things as they do.

Lead by example: Children follow the steps of their parents. Therefore, make sure that you are showing them the right example on thankfulness. Try not to complain when you’re given something in their presence, instead say “thank you” first and complain later.

Encourage them to give: Teach them that giving is good and that when you give, you receive. Take them to orphanages, hospitals and so on, make them give out toys and some of their clothes. With that they’ll be thankful for what they have been given by both their parents and God.
