Teachers shut offices over unpaid promotion arrears

Primary school teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Friday shut down all the Local Education Authority (LEA) offices across the six area councils over alleged non-payment of their promotion arrears by the councils’ chairmen.

Daily Trust reports that the main entrance gates of the LEA’s offices across the area councils were under lock and key.

Both staff of the LEAs and teachers were seen standing in front of the offices’ gates, while officials of the branches of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) prevented some of the staff from accessing their offices, including the LEA’s secretaries.

Some primary school teachers, who spoke with our reporter, bemoaned the non-payment of their promotion areas despite a ministerial template where N30 million will be deducted monthly from the Joint Account Allocation Committee (JAAC) for payment of teachers’ arrears.

Reacting, the FCT secretary of the NUT, Comrade Margarethe I. Jethro, said the union decided to order all its branches to shut down the six area councils LEA offices over non-payment of teachers’ promotion arrears by the council chairmen.
