The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) said it has energised and commissioned three 132/33kV electricity transformers at its substations in Calabar, Uyo and in Lagos state.

The spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah in a statement on Tuesday said while Calabar and Uyo substations got two new 60MVA transformers, the firm replaced a 30MVA with 100MVA transformer at Alimosho Transmission Substation in Lagos.

It noted that the three 132/33kV substations whose capacities were 180MVA, 120MVA and 160MVA respectively have now been upgraded to 240MVA, 180MVA and 230MVA.

The 60MVA Transformer at Calabar which was commissioned by the Head of the Service of the Federation Winifred Ekanem Oyo-Ita is expected to improve the quality of power supply to customers of Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC) in Cross River state.

That of Uyo which was commissioned by the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Emmanual Udom will improve power supply of PHEDC customers in the state; while the 100MVA transformer at Alimosho will significantly improve supply to customers of Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (Ikeja Electric) around Agege area and environs.

TCN noted that the Minister of Power, Works and Housing this month commissioned a 40MVA mobile transformer in Umuahia substation and a 60MVA transformer in Aba, Abia state.

Other completed projects awaiting commissioning are a 100MVA transformer in Ejigbo, Lagos and 60MVA in Zaria substation in Kaduna.

The statement said another 100MVA transformer is being installed at Ejigbo substation and that a new substation is being constructed by TCN Engineers in Elashe area of Lagos.

The public utility firm reiterated that its efforts at rehabilitating and expanding the grid can produce maximum benefit if there is corresponding investment in the various distribution networks nationwide.

TCN said inherent inadequacies in the distribution networks are limiting the amount of power delivered to electricity end-users on daily basis.
