The Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has approved 50 percent waiver for tax defaulters.
Speaking at the weekend during a meeting with the management of the Edo State Inland Revenue service (EIRS) and representatives of tax payers in the state, Obaseki said the moratorium required that all the outstanding tax liabilities running into billions of naira inherited from past governments up to December 1 be paid within 90 days to be eligible for the offer.
“This gesture was in response to some issues of concern raised by some tax payers bothering on wrong profiling and arbitral tax assessment,” he explained, promising to review the tax administration of EIRS to check perceived abuses in tax assessment.
Earlier, EIRS Chairman, Chief Oseni Elamah, said the state government had suspended the enforcement of a Ganeshi order against defaulters of the land use charge and consumer taxes to allow for dialogue.
