In its efforts to reduce boat mishaps, the Association of Inland Water Transporters in Taraba State has banned journeys and overload in all the jetties across the state.

The acting state chairman of the association, Alhaji Jidda Mayoreneyo, disclosed this in an interview at Mayoreneyo, on Wednesday.

He stated that overloading and night journeys were major causes of boat mishaps, adding that when avoided, incidents of boat accidents would be reduced.

He also stated that rescue operation when boats capsized in the night was very difficult and led to higher casualties.

He also revealed that the National Inland Waterways Agency (NIWA) had provided some life jackets to the association to be used by passengers.

He stated further that the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), National Inland Waterways Agency (NIWA) and fire service had conducted enlightenment campaigns on safety measures for water transporters in three zones of the state as part of their efforts to address boat mishaps.
