About six persons including two boys were killed when armed men suspected to be Jukun armed militia attacked residents last night in Wukari located about 200 kilometres away from Jalingo, the Taraba state capital.
The All Progressive Congress (APC) governorship candidate in the April 11 election Hajiya Aisha Jumai Alhassan was declared winner on Saturday by a tribunal sitting in Abuja, thereby nullifying the election of the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) candidate Darius Ishaku as the governor.
A resident of the area Alhaji Ladan told Daily Trust on telephone that they were awakened by gunfire at about 1am Sunday.
He said the attackers invaded their quarters firing and burning houses with no help from security agents even though they sent distress calls to soldiers and other security agencies in the town.
Alhaji ladan alleged that the soldiers who were supposed to come to their rescue were aiding the attackers in killing and burning their houses.
“We were awakened by gun fire from four directions into our area and the attackers chanting to hell with tribunal ruling, to hell with Aisha, We will kill you all" Ladan said.
He further stated that the Jalingo police command was yet to send its men to the area.
The state chairman of the All Progressive Congress (APC) Alhaji Hassan Ardo said they had written to the state police commissioner over the planned attach in Wukari weeks ago and no action was taken.
He alleged that reports he received from Wukari revealed that there were fake soldiers in the area klling people.
He called on the Army Headquarters and the Federal Government to take action immediately and also investigate the killings in Wukari which said was still on-going.
Meanwhile the Public Relation Officer of the Taraba police command DSP Joseph Kwaji could not be reached for comment at the time of this report as his mobile telephone line was off when our reporter called.
