Mr John Bonzana Kizito was yesterday sworn in as the new Speaker of the Taraba State House of Assembly, following the resignation of Joseph Albasu Kunini who quit the office for “personal reasons.”

The Deputy Speaker of the House, Alhaji Hamman Adama Abdullahi, read Kunini’s  letter of resignation dated December 21, 2022, on the floor of the House and immediately opened the floor for members to nominate a new speaker.

Mr John Bonzana Kizito, representing Zing constituency, has been in the House since 2007 and was nominated and consequently elected as the new speaker.

Kunini, the former speaker, was elected as speaker of the house on the 2nd of December, 2019 following the resignation of the then speaker, Mr Abel Diah, and is reputed to have brought stability to the house.

The new speaker, in a speech shortly after taking the oath of office, expressed appreciation to the members for finding him worthy to lead them and promised to operate an open door policy.

Mr Bonzana was first elected as member representing Zing constituency in 2007 and has maintained the seat since then, making him a four-time member of the house.

Daily Trust reports that the former speaker, representing Lau constituency in the Northern senatorial zone of the state, lost the governorship ticket of the  Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during its primaries this year.

Kunini also went to court to challenge the outcome of the governorship primaries.
