The Sokoto State governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has approved the release of about one billion naira for the payment of registration fees and upkeep allowances to some indigent students.

The Permanent Secretary, Sokoto State Scholarship Board, Alhaji Bello Isa, who made the disclosure while speaking to Daily Trust in Sokoto, said the beneficiaries comprised students sponsored by government within and outside the country.

Isah explained that a sum of N188.5 million was for the payment of registration fees to 5,643 fresh and regular students at Sokoto State University (SSU) and N312.9m for 7,096 students at Usmanu Danfodiyo University (UDUS), Sokoto.

 He added that $89,100 and £15,000 were approved as tuition fees and upkeep allowances to some regular students at various institutions in London, Canada and other countries across the world.

The permanent secretary further stated that a sum of $570,000 equivalent to N342, 000, 138 was for the payment of tuition fees and upkeep allowances for both regular and fresh students studying various medical courses in the Republic of Sudan.

He said Governor Tambuwal had also approved the redeployment of Nigerian students evacuated from Ukraine to continue with their studies in other countries.

He stated that some government officials would soon leave Nigeria on a facility tour to Sudan, Egypt and Turkey in order to ascertain the best institutions for the affected students.
