A two-time gubernatorial candidate in Kano State, Malam Salihu Sagir Takai, has emerged governorship candidate of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) for the 2019 elections in the state.
Addressing a press conference yesterday, the party’s state Chairman, Alhaji Sammani Shariff, who was the initial candidate, said based on the outcome of the meeting of the party’s executives and other stakeholders held on Tuesday, Takai was now the flag-bearer of the party.
Alhaji Shariff said, “I sacrifice my mandate to enable Takai run for the seat. He has all the requirements needed, and looking at the situation we find ourselves in Kano, we need someone that can salvage us from the bondage of poverty and political dilemma.
“I sacrifice my position as gubernatorial candidate as part of my contribution towards salvaging Kano from the present political mess. We wooed politicians into the PRP to save Kano and our intention is to form a unity government that will ensure rapid development of Kano State and its people,” he said.
Shariff called on other contenders to accept the new development in good faith, insisting that “the slot for governor is one and therefore only one person can occupy the seat. They should all accept Takai as the party’s candidate and support his candidature.”
He assured the people of Kano that if allowed to form government, PRP would come up with programmes and policies that would improve the lot of the common man, saying, “This is what we need in Kano State.”
It would be recalled that a former Kano State Deputy Governor, Prof. Hafiz Abubakar, Malam Salihu Sagir Takai, Gen. Sulaiman Wali (Rtd), Alhaji Kabiru Muhammad Gwangwazo, Alhaji Aminu Baba Nabegu and Sen. Isa Yahaya Zarewa jostled for the PRP ticket.
