Young artistes making waves in Kannywood

Kannywood is one of the fastest growing indigenous film-making industries in Nigeria besides the Nollywood. The pace at which the industry grows could be directly tied to the rich culture of Hausa man in whose local language the films are being produced.

For over 20 years of existence, Kannywood has been the major employer to teeming jobless but talented youths in the northern part of the country and the strength of the industry hinges on the quality of these young artistes in whose hands the future of the industry lies.

The following are some of the most promising artistes making the waves in the industry.

   

1        Maryam Yahaya: Maryam Yahaya is one of the young actresses in Kannywood with a promising future in the industry. The 21year old screen godess came to the limelight in the Kannywood circles after her lead role in Mansoor, a sensational movie directed by Ali Nuhu. Her dexterity in adapting a role originally meant for Bilkisu Shema endeared her to many Kannywood fans thereby making her a household name among the Hausa movie lovers across the globe.

Born in Goron Dutse, Kano about two decades ago, Maryam Yahaya went to Yelwa primary school for her elementary education and later moved to Bokabo barracks where she obtained her high school certificate before venturing into Kannywood to realize her long held dreams in acting career.

She was first featured in a film Gidan Abinci in which she was assigned minor roles to hone her acting skills before she made her biggest hit with astounding performance in Mansoor two years ago.

 

2        Maryam Booth: Though Maryam Booth has been on the acting profession for long, her wit in adapting wide range of roles effortlessly has made her a relishing sight among the Hausa movie fans within and outside the country.

She is the daughter of a onetime veteran Kannywood actress, ​Zainab Booth.​ She started acting when she was 8 years old and came into the limelight with her hit movie Dijangala which was released in 2007.

Maryam was born in October 28th 1993, she started her education in Ebony Nursery and primary school in 1996.  In 2002 she went to Ahmadiya secondary school. She is currently observing her mandatory national youth service after her university education.

Maryam had formally acted in Keji, Dawainiya, Rashin Uwa, her younger brother Ramadan Booth has also ventured into acting.

 

3        Umar M. Sharif: The 31 year old Shereef has been one of the talented Hausa R&B musicians in the country. His songs span across wide range of themes, and many aspects of human social life.

Born in Kaduna, the award winning sensation has over 500 Hausa R&B songs to his credit before he eventually ventured into acting and film production. Among the films he produced are Mahaifiyata, Nas, Jinin Jikina, Bazan barki ba and many others.

His fame soared higher with great intensity recently after his leading role along with Maryam Yahaya in Mansoor.

Shereef is unarguably one of the most sought-after actors making the waves in Kannywood.

4        Garzali Miko: A lighting director turned actor-cum-producer, Miko was the right-hand-man of Ali Nuhu the christened king of Kannywood. He came into limelight after his astounding performance in the film directed by Ali Nuhu called ‘Gamu nan dai’.

His ingenuity in translating the script into action endeared him to many producers thereby becoming a hot cake in the industry.

Miko has featured in many films among them are Hadari, Ameerah, Zee zee, Guguwar so, Makaryaci, Wata dukiya and many others.
