A former lecturer at the Department of History, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Dr Yaro Gella, died on Saturday after a protracted illness.

He died at a private hospital in Jabi, Abuja, at about 1 pm, according to one of his foster sons, Adamu Fika.

A friend of the deceased, Professor Mahmoud Hamman of the Department of History, ABU, Zaria, described him as a hardworking and diligent academic.

Professor Hamman said they graduated together with the deceased from ABU, Zaria in July 1975.

Gella did his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Oyo State and completed it in 1976.

After his NYSC, he was employed in June 1976 as a Graduate Assistant by the ABU, Zaria.

He first left ABU on ‘Leave of Absence’ to serve in the then Gongola State as a commissioner and later as Secretary to the State Government.

Around 1990/1991, he transferred his service to the Federal Public Service where he served in the Police Service Commission and National Commission for Museum and Monument.

He left ABU as a Senior Lecturer, according to Professor Hamman.

After he retired from the public service, he was engaged to teach in the History Department of the Nasarawa State University, which was his last appointment before his demise.

He left behind one wife and many children.
