In a statement signed by Chief Ayakeme Whisky on behalf of NNSG executive secretary, Tony Uranta, the group said the clarification became necessary in view of questions being asked by “discerning Nigerians.”
“The Alhaji Tanko Yakasai led Nigerian National Summit Group (NNSG) wishes to bring to the notice of all Nigerians that the proposed national political summit scheduled to take place in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, is being organised by a distinct body, Project Nigeria, which is led by Prof. Ben Nwabueze. This clarification has become very imperative because of the numerous inquiries and clarification sought by discerning Nigerians who have over the years rightly associated the Nigerian National Summit Group (NNSG) with the task of organising genuine dialogue to address the myriad of problems facing Nigeria through national conference,” part of the statement read.
The statement added that though Professor Nwabueze was one of the co-conveners of its inaugural meeting in Lagos in February, 2012, “It is noteworthy that midway into the meeting, our elder statesman Prof. Ben Nwabueze, whose main objective was to persuade participants to endorse the concept of Sovereign National Conference (SNC) which obviously was not the preferred mode of dialogue by majority of participants, staged a walk-out”.
The group added that at the appropriate time, it will release its time table for zonal consultations and all requisite modalities leading to the convention of a national conference or dialogue.
