The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters has given the 2016 Abel Prize to Sir Andrew J. Wiles of Oxford University for his proof that opened a new era on number theory in Mathematics.
A statement made available to Daily Trust yesterday indicated that Wiles won the award for his stunning proof of Fermat’s Last Theorem by way of the modularity conjecture for semis table elliptic curves. The statement said the complete proof found by Wiles relies on three further concepts in number theory, namely elliptic curves, modular forms and Galois representations. In its modern form, the subject was fundamentally connected to complex analysis, algebraic geometry, and representation theory.
