Speaking with our correspondent in Kano, the vice chairman said the House of Assembly should mandate the House Committee on Local Governments to probe the councils so that the corruption perpetrated by them would be uncovered.

“I am in this system as vice chairman of my local government for five to six years. So I am aware of all the sleaze and corruption committed,” Alhaji Imam said.

He lamented that the local governments in the state were left almost without supervision, and every council chairman runs the affairs of the council according to his whims and caprices.

According to him, being left without supervision, the local government chairmen administered the council affairs like monarchs despite the fact that democracy was not a monarchy.

“The burden of probe and keeping tab on our activities are responsibilities of the House of Assembly. And they will account for that in the Day of Judgment. The House of Assembly has the right to monitor our activities, to penalise them and to stop them where they falter,” he said.

Continuing, he said: “As our name – local government – implies, we need close monitoring and supervision from a more superior authority so that we would be guided. We are in place to bring social amenities and development to the grassroots or to the lowly in the society, but we end up doing something else.”
