The community, consisting of 56 flats, was also presented with basic sanitation and cleaning implements, comprising three sets of wheel borrows, handgloves, shovels, rakes, flowers trimmers and cutlasses to assist them during monthly sanitation exercise.
Speaking at the event, the Director, Mrs. Aishat Adebayo, said the award was informed by the level of organization and prompt response to environmental issues displayed by the residents which had visibly impacted positively within their immediate neighbourhood.
She said the neighbourhood sanitation, which is in line with global best practices, offers every resident of the FCT opportunity to be a stakeholder in environment management and to canvass for attitudinal change, which is a major challenge to sustainable city management.
“The board adopted this people-oriented programme to see to it that every resident of the FCT has a stake in environment management, inculcate good sanitary habits and encourage the people to see the environment as their immediate responsibility,” she added.
While commending the residents for their demonstration of co-oporation and coordination, Adebayo explained that the award is targeted at motivating them to improve on the already existing sanitation consciousness, and for other residents to emulate.
Responding, the Chairman, Uromi Close Management Committee, Philip Bankole, said the award was unexpected, as their efforts to ensuring a friendly environment was purely motivated by the slogan ‘cleanliness is next to Godliness’ and not on the award.
Represented by Anthony Momoh, the chairman however expressed appreciation to the board for finding them worthy of such honour, pledging to keep up the tempo as well as proper management of the equipment donated to them.
