The former president, who spoke while receiving national identity card, said after his Nigerian passport, his mark is the next form of identity.
Obasanjo urged the commission to create mobile centres across the country to enable people obtain the cards with ease.
“Not many people know that I have three identity cards. One is this national card, the other is my international passport and the third one is my tribal marks,” he said.
Director General, National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Mr Chris Onyemenam, who led a team to Obasanjo’s residence, said they were embarrassed by reports that the card will replace the Nigerian passport.
Onyemena said the commission is working to ensure that the rural populace benefit from the scheme.
He added that the challenges of infrastructure, literacy and illegal residents are hampering the smooth conduct of the exercise.
He said distribution of the cards will commence next week.
