Mr. Joel Sawyerr, a neighbour who lodged a complaint on behalf of Miss Simon in a letter he wrote to the Plateau State Commissioner of Police, alleged that her parents, Mr. Pelamoh Simon and Mrs. Stella Simon both residents of  Heipang, “physically abused” her,  saying they believed she was a witch.

Narrating her ordeal in the letter, Victoria said on Friday, April 18, 2008, her parents took her to one Baba  Akili in a village in Bokkos Local Government Area to help cure her of the alleged witchcraft. “There she was chained to a tree, flogged regularly and only fed occasionally,” the letter stated.

She claimed that Akili had planned to burn her alive but she escaped and returned to Jos in June last year.

According to the letter which was made available to Weekly Trust and signed by the Legal Officer for the League of Human Rights, Mr. Akinropo Omoware, both her parents and Baba Akili were arrested after the matter was reported to the police at Heipang and later taken to an Area Court in Barkin Ladi LGA but  the case was struck out for want of diligent prosecution.

Miss Simon also said when the case was struck out, she had to return to her parents where she was again taken to Baba Akili’s house. Her father then came to Baba Akili’s house and gave her a paltry sum of money and asked her to fend for herself and never to return to his house.

She said in one of the nights, she was thrown out of the house, raped and is presently pregnant, “She has since been in the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) where she is receiving treatment at the expense of Mr. Sawyerr who the parents are now accusing of abducting their daughter.”

“It is on this note that we are writing to you to use your good office to investigate this matter properly and bring the perpetrators of this inhuman and criminal acts against this young girl to book,” the letter requested.

The parents could not be reached to get their reaction on the matter.

The Plateau State Police Public Relations Officer, Muhammed Lerama, has confirmed the incident, Saying the police is still investigating the matter.
