‘Tackle assault on teachers before it spreads to polytechnics, universities’

The Rector, Federal Polytechnic Ilaro, Dr Olusegun Aluko, has asked the Ogun State Government to tackle the ongoing assault on teachers by some “unruly” students before it escalates to higher institutions.

Lately, some students in some secondary schools in the state reportedly hired thugs, stormed the schools and beat up their teachers.

In October alone, no fewer than four cases of such attacks were recorded in different public schools in the State.

Speaking with newsmen in Abeokuta on the development, Aluko said the full weight of the law should be brought on those students to serve as a deterrent to others.

According to him, if the act is left unchecked, it will continue to go around all the schools and even Polytechnics and universities.

Aluko said, “The way out is to enforce discipline and once you enforce discipline and they know you are fair and just, all of them will comply.

“Those students that are beating up their teachers I don’t see them being allowed into any school in Ogun state again because if they are expelled from that school, they should follow them up and make sure that they serve as a deterrent to others and those of them that are above the age that can even be prosecuted, they should prosecute them.

“Because if we don’t check it, it will continue to go round all the schools.

“Imagine if they get away with it, then that means when they get to higher institutions, they can afford to beat up their lecturers, the rector or the Vice-Chancellor.”
