The customers who besieged various offices of Airtel in Lagos lamented how they were treated.

Airtel in a text to the customers

said “Dear Rewardz Customers, you can now redeem steam iron, a bag of rice or power stabilizer from any Airtel shop, if you hurry now. Offer valid while stocks lasts, sender Airtel. ”

One of the subscribers, who simply gave his name as Tunde told Weekly Trust  that he came from Abeokuta upon receiving the text on Tuesday. “To my dismay, I was told by a very rude lady at the counter that they no longer have redeemable items left.”

The scene at the Airtel shop on Oba Akran Ikeja Lagos,  was chaotic with hundreds of customers reading the notices on the wall in respect of the promo.

The visibly angry customers said they suspected sabotage by the staff of the company.

“I only received the text in the evening of Tuesday and this morning (Wednesday), I am told they have exhausted the items. When were they given out,” Mr. Tunde asked.

The subscribers on getting to Ikeja office of Airtel were told that there are no more prizes while some of the customers proceeded to another Airtel shop in Ogba where they were also told that the gift items for the promo had finished.

“The way they talk to us is not good especially that fat woman at the front desk. We didn’t come here to beg. They invited us, and when they lauched this promo, they didn’t say the offer will last while stock lasted. Now, the tune of the music has changed. It is so annoying,” Mr. Oladele Omoluabi fumed.

At the Ogba office of Airtel, the story was the same with scores of customers who have stormed the place to claim their prizes which the operator’s staff told them had finished.

A young man, who gave his name as Steven said “I haven’t seen anybody that was given any gift. What pains me most is that I had to leave my work to come, only to be told that the items have finished. I was really disappointed. My point should have earned me a standing fan.”

Spokesman of Airtel Nigeria Mr. Emmanuel Otokhine did not pick his call nor did he return the SMS sent to his mobile line by our correspondents.

However, a staff with Airtel who gave his name as Emmanuel at the Oba Akran office of the company said they had been overwhelmed by hundreds of subscribers coming to redeem their prizes and had exhausted their stock. He said the text message put a caveat that offers lasts while stock last.

In December 2009, Airtel Nigeria, then going by the brand name Zain Nigeria launched the Reward promotion which provided that its customers would accrue points cumulatively to redeem various gifts depending on the number of points garnered.
