The companies were Nigerian Bottling Company Plc, First Bank Of Nigeria Plc, Skye Bank Plc, The Okomu Oil Palm Plc, Cussons Nigeria Plc, Big Treat Plc,  Big Treat Plc, Cadbury Nigeria Plc and Courteville Investment Plc  

The market went bearish during the week with the market capitalization of the 198 First -Tier equities closed lower at N6.627 trillion, depreciated by N152 billion against the Monday dealings of N6.779 trillion. The NSE All-Share Index depreciated by 2.1 per cent to close on Friday at 27,400.21 point level attributed to the decline in the prices of the highly capitalized stocks against Monday’s  28,029.78 point level

 Also, The NSE-30 Index depreciated by 1.9 per cent to close at 1,115.53. Last week, ASI and NSE-30 Index appreciated by 1.04 per cent and 2.1 per cent, respectively. One of the four sectoral indices appreciated – The NSE Oil/Gas Index appreciated by 3.15 per cent to close at 410.26. However, the NSE Food/Beverages Index depreciated by 0.6 per cent to close at 817.68, while the NSE Banking Index depreciated by 4.7 per cent to close at 439.09 and the NSE Insurance Index depreciated by 0.92 per cent to close at 206.84.

However, a turnover of 3.36 billion shares worth N35.81 billion in 52,110 deals was recorded this week, in contrast to a total of 3.71 billion shares valued at N25.73 billion exchanged last week in 61,124 deals. There were no transactions in the Federal Government Development Stocks, State Government Bonds and Industrial Loans/Preference Stocks sectors.

The Banking subsector was the most active during the week (measured by turnover volume), with 1.7 billion shares worth N22.6 billion exchanged by investors in 23,269 deals. Volume in the Banking subsector was largely driven by activity in the shares of First Bank of Nigeria Plc. Trading in the shares of the Bank accounted for 565.02 million shares, representing 33.15 per cent and 16.83 per cent of the subsector’s turnover and total volume traded during the week, respectively. The Insurance subsector, boosted by activity in the shares of Continental Reinsurance Plc and AIICO Insurance Plc, followed on the week’s activity chart with a turnover of 619.6 million shares valued at N669.4 million in 4,057 deals. Last week, the Insurance subsector led on the activity chart and was followed by the Banking subsector.

However, 42 stocks appreciated in price during the week, lower than the 64 of the preceding week. Nestle Nigeria Plc led on the gainers’ table with a gain of N24.50 to close at N314.00 per share while Mobil Oil Nigeria Plc followed with N23.42 to close at N174.86 per share. Other price gainers include Guinness Nigeria Plc with N10.12 , Conoil Plc N7.63, Julius Berger Nigeria Plc N6.53, 7-Up Bottling Co. Plc N6.02, Oando Plc N5.49, Cadbury Nigeria Plc N3.18, Unilever Nigeria Plc N2.01 and Benue Cement Company Plc withN1.92

In the same vein, 71 stocks depreciated in price during the week, higher than the 53 of the preceding week. African Petroleum Plc led on the price losers’ table, dropping by N7.39 to close at N40.00 per share while Guaranty Trust Bank Plc followed with a loss of N5.98 to close at N18.48 per share. Other price losers include Nigerian Bottling Co. Plc with N5.05, Flour Mills Nigeria Plc N3.50, UACN Property Dev. Co. Plc N2.88, Lafarge Cement WAPCO Nigeria Plc N2.72, Cement Co. of Northern Nig. Plc N2.26, Nigerian Breweries Plc N1.82, Glaxo Smithkline Consumer (Nig) Plc N1.80 and Ashaka Cement Plc with N1.42

Four equity prices were adjusted for dividend and/or bonus as recommended by the Board of Directors. RT Briscoe (Nig) Plc was adjusted for dividend of N0.10 per share and bonus of 1 for 5. Total Nigeria Plc was adjusted for final dividend of N8.28 per share. Guaranty Trust Bank Plc was adjusted for dividend of N0.75 per share and bonus of I for 4. Oando Plc was adjusted for dividend of N3.00 per share …Supplementary Listings A total of 136,152,000 shares were added to the shares outstanding in the name of RT Briscoe (Nig) Plc on Monday, April 19, 2010 following the bonus of 1 for 5. Also, a total of 4,663,437,153 shares were added to the shares outstanding in the name of Guaranty Trust Bank Plc on Tuesday, April 20, 2010 following the bonus of 1 for 4.
