Chairman/CEO of NERC, Dr. Sam Amadi who said this Saturday, at a one-day energy workshop organised in Abuja on ‘NERC and the Challenges of Privatisation’, also tasked consumers to constitute civil society groups to press home their needs and ideologies in organised manner.
Amadi who fielded questions from energy correspondents during the technical session said reform in the private power sector would not be instantaneous as the investors during the testing and interim period of takeover will be restructuring the facilities for optimal results.
He urged consumers to embrace the household metering system by Distribution companies (Discos) as it would ensure accountability in billing systems and eliminate the previous issues with the estimated billing method.
Also responding, Commissioner for NERC Consumer Affairs Division, Dr. Abba Ibrahim reiterated that the commission will not hesitate to fully enforce penalties and sanctions for breaches in service delivery by any of the firms.
Ibrahim further disclosed that revenue from such sanctions will be ploughed into the Power Consumer Assistance Fund (PCAF) to help in subsidising electricity charges for low income earners.
In his presentation, Roland Achor of the Market Competitions and Rates Division said the MYTO2 tariff system has a biannual minor review informed by changes in inflation and exchange rates, gas price and available generation capacity.
Such changes, he also said would be effected in the tariff by December 1, 2013 after consulting with stakeholders.
