A 200 level student of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) Bauchi, who was allegedly beaten and stabbed on Wednesday night, died in a hospital yesterday, Daily Trust on Sunday gathered.
Yusuf Musa, according to reports was until his death a student of the Department of Mechanical Production Engineering in the university.
Musa was reportedly stabbed following a misunderstanding between him and another student.
A source said the deceased had an argument with a 500 Level student of the same department, whose name was given as Dauda.
A source who spoke on the condition of anonymity said: “It all started about three weeks ago when the deceased, Yusuf, and his friend where passing through a road close to his house and met Dauda standing with a lady by the roadside. He (Dauda) prevented the duo from passing through, so Yusuf’s friend started exchanging words with him. But the deceased pleaded with Daudu to let them go. Instead of listening to him, Dauda started insulting Yusuf and this angered him and he( the deceased) shouted back at him.”
The source added that the feud between Yusuf and Dauda continued until Monday when he alongside five others attacked the deceased.
According to the source, Dauda returned again on Wednesday with the same people and attempted to beat up Yusuf again, but that neighbours intervened.
“It was after that that we heard that Yusuf was hit with a big stick and then stabbed with a knife”, the source added.
When contacted, the ATBU Public Relations Officer, Zailani Bappah, said the management could not comment on the matter as it was already with the police.
He, however, noted that though both the deceased and the culprit were students of the institution, the incident occurred outside the school.
“Yes, I am aware of the incident and they are our students. But I must tell you that the incident did not occur on Yelwa Campus or the Gubi Campus. It didn’t occur on the school facility.
“This is not our case but that of the police. The management is not officially aware of it; we are only on-lookers. We are also waiting for them (police) to give us details”, he said.
The Bauchi State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mahmood Mohammed, said the case was under investigation and had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
“An exhibit was recovered from the scene of the incident; the stick which was used to hit the deceased. We are working hard to recover the other exhibit that was used to stab him,” Mohammed said.
He said one person had been arrested in connection with the incident and that efforts are on to arrest fleeing suspects.
