One person was confirmed dead and three rescued, with eight others presently trapped in an accident involving two merchant ships off Nigerian waters. The MT Elixir and MT Tank collided midstream 10 nautical miles south- west of the multi-billion dollar Bonga FPSO, near Warri in Delta State.
The three were reportedly rescued by naval personnel attached to the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) who were sent on a search and rescue mission minutes after the two ships collided.
NIMASA’s deputy head of public relations, HajiaLaminTumaka, who confirmed the incident, said divers and other rescue personnel were still at the site where about eight crew members of MT. Tank appeared to have been trapped.
“Search and Rescue personnel of the Agency have rescued three crew members and recovered one body from the incident which occurred about 65 miles from shore, just 10 nautical miles south west of the Bonga FPSO near Warri where two vessels; MT Elixir and MT Tank collided midstream,” she said.
