Shanono was our last hope, laments family of slain medical student

Shanono, who was a 400 level student of Medicine at the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, was killed during a   clash between factions of the NURTW. The deceased along with four other of his colleagues were in South-West for sensitization campaign on maternal mortality.

His remains were laid to rest at the Unguwar Kanawa Muslim cemetery in accordance with Islamic rites around 1.00 pm penultimate Wednesday amidst hundreds of his family members, friends, neighbours and course mates who were seen weeping.

Speaking for the deceased family, his immediate elder brother, Haruna Bala Shanono called on President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan to ensure that the killers are brought to book.

“We are blaming the security agencies for the killing of  our family member because for five hours the union members were exchanging bullets  without any security agent coming to rescue innocent persons who were trapped at the motor park. This is unfortunate and we want the government to arrest and punish the killers and we want it to be done publicly, he said.

According to Haruna, the deceased was the future of our family, in fact our last hope on this earth. He was the first person to study medicine in our whole family including the extended one consisting over 500 people. No amount of compensation can be enough to replace him.”

Giving account of how the late NIMSA president was murdered by the union, executive members of the medical association who travelled with the deceased said the union members first shot him before taking him to an unknown destination where they burnt him beyond recognition.

They said the union members fought for about five hours without any intervention of security operatives. One of them, who is the Secretary-General of NIMSA, Shuibu Sabiti, said they went to Iwo Park, after taking part in the sensitization campaign on maternal death in Ife, Osun State.

“When five of us, including the late NIMSA president arrived the park, there was no bus although there were many passengers waiting. And around 11.30pm, there was a stampede at the park as members of factions of the union were shooting sporadically at passengers.  We lied down flat, and some of us ran from the scene, we jumped into the gutter where we stayed for hours, but late Shanono stayed there lying flat. It seemed the bullet hit him where he was,” he said.

He said after the gun battle,a faction of the union came and asked those who were injured to stay on one side and those that were not on another side.

“It was at this point that they asked Shanono and other passengers, who were injured to enter a bus, but they asked those who had no injuries to run away from the scene. They then left the scene with the late NIMSA president, who had a gun injury. They took him to an unknown location, where they burned him beyond recognition,”he added.

He said late Shanono’s corpse was seen on Monday among other three lifeless bodies, which had also been burnt. He disclosed that they were able to identify Shanono because of the clip of the NIMSA tag, the ring on his hand and his body stature.

He blamed security operatives in the state for not drafting their men to the scene of the clash on time and urged the Federal Government to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book.

A Kaduna based community leader, Shareeff Kassimu urged the Federal Government to institute a panel to fish out the killers of the late student leader and that his family should be compensated by the Oyo State and Federal Governments, stressing that the late student was on national assignment.

“We want to know those who killed him and the motive behind their action because when Youth Corps members were killed during the post election riots, there ware noises everywhere in the country especially by the Southern press, but now the reverse is the case. This will not help our country. Why the silence from the Oyo state government? Can we say those responsible for Shanono’s death are above the law? He queried.

His teacher of the extra mural classes in Kaduna, Mallam Jibrin Zakirai described the late NIMSA as an intelligent introvert who was always willing to learn.

“It was unfortunate that he died this way; he had a brilliant future but we believe that it was Allah’s  will that it happened that way. May his soul rest in perfect peace,’’ he prayed.
