Onoh, a former commissioner for environment in the state, made this allegation when the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 6 Tunde Ogunsakin met with leaders of all parties in Calabar to sign a peace accord.
He alleged that based on intelligence reports at his disposal, the arms build up was frightening to the extent that they were already been used to attack political opponents.
He said: “It is alleged that these arms were being amassed by political stalwarts in the state who did not want to lose election,” and called on the police not to take sides in the elections.
Speaking, chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, Usani Uguru Usani, said hired gunmen were on the prowl in some parts of the state.
“I witnessed how in broad daylight gunmen were freely shooting at political opponents in my ward in Yakurr LGA when I travelled there. I had to lodge this report at the Ugep Police Station, but nothing was done for these gunmen to explain sources of their weapons,” he said.
The AIG Ogunsakin said he has ordered the police in the state to immediately embark on stop and search operations, saying they would not compromise safety of lives and property in view of the alleged arms proliferation.
“There shall be no sacred cows not only in Cross River State but in all states under my zone. I have the capability to overwhelm heady politicians. I urge all those who are illegally in possession of arms to surrender same before we embark on massive raids,” he said.
