One of the affected areas is the Diamond Estate, where over 137 boreholes and deep wells are affected by the leakage of petroleum products as a result of pipeline vandalism, destroying the source of portable water for residents, Daily Trust gathered.
The state government also frowned at what it described as indiscriminate arrest of residents around Idimu and Ejigbo areas of the state by men of Nigerian Civil Defence Corps (NDSDC) for alleged pollution of underground water.
The state’s Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Tunji Bello, while addressing newsmen at the weekend, called on the community development associations and leaders in the affected communities to institute legal actions against the Federal Government over the exposure of their communities to danger.
Bello, who noted that the state government supports every effort and action of the Federal Government to curb stealing of petroleum products and pipeline vandalism across the nation, condemned all acts that could constitute an infraction on the rights of residents of the affected areas.
“We recollect that successive administrations in the state drew the attention of the Federal Government to concomitant of hazards being experienced by residents of Baruwa- Ipaja, Ilado, Amuwo-Odofin, Ejigbo among others through polluted boreholes, contamination of underground water, ruptured pipelines and seepage of pipelines, yet, no visible action has been taken till date by respective agencies of the Federal Government,” he said.
