Row at FCE Zaria over varsity status

The Academic Staff Union of Universities of Education (ASUUE), Federal University of Education (FUE), Zaria branch yesterday described the alleged move by the federal government to revert the four federal colleges of education that were converted to universities to their former status as retrogressive.
The chairman of the ASUUE-FUE, Zaria, Yahuza Salmanu, made this known during a press conference.
However, shortly after Salmanu had completed his address, a member of the union, Malam Maina Yahaya Yakubu, objected to the submission of the chairman, saying that the press briefing was called without the consent of the academic staff.
“The procedure is that before the chairman speaks on behalf of members, a congress has to approve it. In this case, no congress was held and the chairman was saying that it was the decision of members to advise federal government not to revert the college to its former status of Federal College of Education. It should be noted that a significant percentage of the academic staff are in support of retaining the college as Federal College of Education, Zaria because of certain inherent advantages that include running degree programme and NCE at the same time, which would prevent the sacking of any staff,” Yakubu said.
Salmanu had earlier stated that the four colleges of education in Zaria, Kano, Owerri and Ondo that were upgraded to universities have been running undergraduate programmes for decades, therefore they are not beginners in that area.
Salmanu advised President Buhari not to revert the universities to their former status of colleges of education, as doing that would amount to taking the education sector backward since degree holders with teacher-training background are needed even in nursery schools.
Our correspondent reports that the disagreement has sharply divided the school community, causing apprehension among staff and students.
