Although it’s been argued that machines will overtake humans in terms of performing more tasks at the workplace in future, there could still be more new roles that may emerge, the General Manager, HR & Shared Services, of Genesis Group, Mr. Timi Tope Ologunoye has said.

He said this yesterday during a masterclass session on the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI), robotics and technological disruptions at the just concluded Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria (CIPM) Annual National Conference in Abuja.

This year’s conference which brought over 2,700 Human Resource (HR) professionals to proffer solutions to the most contemporary people issues in the workplace had as its theme: “Disruption: Change the Game.”

Ologunoye said, “Yes! It is true that tech disruptions, AI, machine learning, robotics will take away a lot of jobs but one thing that we found out is that the World Economic Forum (WEF) report of last year shows that it will take some jobs away but it will create some other jobs.

So, it is taking 75m jobs away, 133m jobs are being created. That is 70 per cent more jobs that are being created. So, yes while is valid point for us to be afraid about what the future holds, there is also hope that as technology is taking away certain jobs it is creating some other job.”

Amid this disruptions, Ologunoye said what HR managers need to do is to understand the challenges that the new tools bring and how to guide their employees to prepare for future that will ultimately come.
