An incident that may have led to another riot by inmates at the Oke-Kura prisons in Ilorin, Kwara State capital, was averted during the weekend when the zonal controller of the Nigeria Prison Service from Mina visited the state.
The Comptroller-General of the Service (NPS), Mr. Ja’afaru Ahmed, also stormed the state over the incident.
A prison official said inmates at the prison had re-grouped trying to cause trouble while the zonal controller was addressing them but the situation was quickly brought under control.
At least six inmates were said to have lost their lives while about five others were on danger list following a riot enacted by inmates at two different prisons in the state last week.
It was learnt that the inmates, who were in the condemned inmates’ cell, had protested substandard quality of food they were served.
But a prison official said, “It has become a culture of the condemned inmates every year to enact a riot scene especially when December is approaching so that they could gain freedom.”
