A Reverend Sister attached to a Catholic church in Ojo area of Lagos was almost lynched yesterday by an angry mob who mistook her for a kidnapper.
The Reverend Sister simply identified as Nwamu was in company of six children when she was attacked at Iyana Iba.
She and the children were on their way to a church programme in Ibadan, Oyo State when the incident occurred.
Eyewitnesses alleged that the woman, said to be the Head of Sports and Tourism of Labore Dei, a Catholic mission at Mowo area of Badagry, had stopped to attend to one of the children who was crying when the mob swooped down on her, requesting to know the parents of the children.
The witnesses further alleged that before she could offer any explanation, the mob consisting mainly of commercial motorcycle riders descended on her.
“It was the timely arrival of the police from Ojo Police Division that saved the situation. The Reverend Sister sustained deep cut on her left eyes.
“She and the children were later taken to the police station where they were kept under protective custody at the instance of the Divisional Police Officer,” an eye witness said.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Joeseph Offor who confirmed the incident, said the Divisional Police Officer later sent a team of policemen to Mowo to verify the claims of the Reverend Sister.
“Police discovered that all that the woman said was true. She would have been mistakenly killed if not for the police who arrived on time to save the situation. After interrogation, she would be allowed to continue her journey to Ibadan along with children,” Offor said.
