COHEADS in a communiqué after its 127th regular meeting at the Federal Polytechnic Oko, Anambra State, urged the federal government to urgently review the policy.
The seven-point communiqué which was signed by the chairman, Dr. Kabiru Matazu also urged the federal government to end the current polytechnic lecturers’ strike, saying it has brought untold hardship to students, parents and other stakeholders with serious consequences on technical and vocational education and the national economy.
COHEADS also called on the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) to review the existing carrying capacity policy to encompass the policy of improving access and quality of technical and vocational education in polytechnics and Colleges of Technology.
The rectors commended the federal government’s effort on the needs assessment of polytechnics but urged the government to expedite action on the report to commit funds for the improvement of the decaying infrastructure in the polytechnic sub-sector.
They congratulated the new governor of Anambra State, Dr. Willie Obiano, on his election and swearing-in and commended him for embarking on the special vocational training schemes in the state targeted at empowering youth with functional skills. Governor Obiano urged the rectors to brainstorm on possible ways to proffer solutions to lingering strike actions by polytechnic lecturers.
