Former Director-General of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Barr Lanre Ipinmiso, has said that recovery from drug abuse is not only expensive but slow.

He said one recovers faster from surgery than drugs, adding that to rehabilitate a drug addict alone costs as much as N6m for the first 90 days.

The ex-NDLEA boss spoke during the Ramadan lecture organized by the foremost Islamic organization, Nasrullahi Fathi Society of Nigeria (NASFAT) held at NASFAT Islamic Centre along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Ogun state.

Chief Imam of Offa, Kwara State, Shaykh Muhyideen Hussein and Ipinmiso delivered the lecture.

The former NDLEA DG, who spoke on the topic, “Our Children, our favours; safeguarding them from drug abuse” said drug abuse has reached a pandemic level, warning parents to keep tabs on their children.

He also tasked the Federal Government to address the issue of illegal weapons and proceeds of fraud in wrong hands, saying addressing these problems in addition to drug abuse would make the nation safer and more prosperous.

“With the level of drugs we have, the level of illegal weapons we have, the level of illegal proceeds of fraud and corruption, it is very difficult to attain peace in Nigeria. 

“Parents should pay attention to their homes. Don’t use 24/7 chasing money. The money may come but you find out that the family for whom you are laboring for are in wrecks that money cannot revive” he added.

President of NASFAT, Engr. Kamil Bolarinwa, said the society was concerned about the rising cases of drug abuse and it is championing the course of enlightening the populace.
