Reading books can halt violence in Plateau communities – Don

A Professor of English in the University of Jos, David Jowitt, has said the recurrent crises in several communities in Plateau State and even beyond can be halted if youths imbibe the habit of reading books. 

Professor Jowitt who has lived in Nigeria for about 48 years now, had taught in several schools across the country and has authored many academic books and articles. 

Speaking in Jos at the Youngman Africa International peace workshop, the university don said reading educative books at all times will enrich the mind and embossed on it positive and innovative thoughts. 

And with good and valuable thoughts, he said, there would be no room in one’s mind for negative thinking or idea that would be inimical to the society. 

He said since the culture of reading diminished, violence has intensified across many communities in Plateau State and other parts of the country. 

In his remarks, one of the resource persons, Prince Charles Dickson, said either for peace or war, social media is an effective tool.
