A 40-year-old publisher, Adebayo Adeyemi, who allegedly defrauded his customer of chipboard papers valued at N400,000, on Tuesday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

Adeyemi resides at No. 5, Kala St., Surulere, Lagos.

The prosecutor, Inspector Aondohemba Koti told the court that the accused collected chipboard papers valued at N400, 000 from the complainant, Mr Olalekan Odejimi with a promise to pay back, but failed to do so.

Koti said that the accused committed the offence sometime in 2017 at No. 23, Ladipo St., Mushin, Lagos.

He said that the accused, who had not paid a dime back, allegedly collected the chipboard papers, valued at N400, 000 from the complainant, with an understanding that he would remit the money in installments.

“The accused bolted with the said goods and also threatened the complainant verbally,” the prosecutor said.

Koti said that the offences violated Section 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 314 prescribes 15 years jail term for any offenders upon conviction.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

In her ruling, the Magistrate, Mrs M. O. Tanimola, granted the accused bail of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

Tanimola said that the sureties must be gainfully employed with an evidence of three years tax payment to the Lagos State Government. She said that the sureties’ addresses must be verified by the court.

Tanimola adjourned the case until Aug. 22 for further hearing. (NAN)
