The protesting students said the management arbitrarily increased the fees from N9,000 to N34,000. They sang anti-management songs to denounce its action, describing the new fee as a “heavy burden”.
“This protest is also to remind Mrs. Theresa Taiwo Akande, the Rector of the polytechnic, of the promise she made during her meeting with students representatives when she promised that the school cannot survive without increasing the school fees but promised that the fees would only be increased at four year intervals.
“She failed to fulfil this pledge and instead, the fee is being increased at every semester instead of the four years interval she promised,” a representative said.
According to the students, a letter had earlier been sent to the rector concerning the fees as soon as they noticed the increase.
In the letter, they pleaded with the rector to reply them through the dean, but she did not comply as the dean was said to have denied receiving any such letter from her.
The school’s spokesman, Adeyemi Adejolu, who confirmed the closure, said as part-time students, they were not expected to unionise since they are workers who could afford the new fees.
He, however, said management and the students were talking to find a lasting solution.
