Reflecting on current developments in the country at a news conference in Kano, Malam Garba said the Inspector General of Police should be called to order to focus mainly on the constitutional responsibilities of the police.
His words: “Recent actions of the police in Ekiti, at the National Assembly, Abuja and in Lagos are threatening the country’s democracy.   There are more serious issues that should attract the attention of the police than meddling into politics and stopping members of the House of Representatives from performing their constitutional duties that Nigerians elected them for.”
He argued that the politicisation of the issue of extending period of the state emergency in the North-east states presented serious danger to the country.
“We have been very consistent in urging politicians not to politicise the issue of insurgency that is bedevilling us but, unfortunately, they have politicised it. Unless politicians separate the issue from politics, the fight against the insurgents may not yield the desired results.”
While urging politicians to learn to accept defeat and accommodate one another, he said the trend whereby all political events in the country are characterised by violence portend danger for the 2015 elections.
Garba urged President Jonathan to urgently convene a meeting of the National Economic Management team to address the continued slide of the naira.
