The Federal Government has completed the building of a recycling plant in Kogi State to address the menace of plastic and other waste pollution in the country.
The Minister of State for Environment, Ibrahim Usman Jibril who stated this on Tuesday while briefing Journalists on the forthcoming 12th National Council on Environment, (NCE) starting on 29th of October, said the plant is completed and waiting to be commissioned and handed over to the state government.
He said the plant in Karu, Abuja is in advanced stage of completion as machines to be install are already on ground as well as two vehicles, saying it will be completed soon.
Speaking on this year’s NCE coming up in Ondo state tagged “Environment and Security in Nigeria: Consolidating Nigeria’s Environment Sector Reform towards Sustainable development’, the minister said it will give stakeholders opportunity to discuss environmental issues with the view of generating actionable policies to guide actions towards ameliorating the negative concerns and take proactive steps for sustainable environment.
He said the theme was captured to reflect resolve of the government to fully implement the Economic Recovery Growth Plan (ERGP).
While noting that adequate consideration shall be given to the peculiarities of issues affecting Nigeria, he said at the end of the meeting, policy frameworks on flood, erosion, pollution, and desert encroachment are expected to be generated to ensure the environment is kept safe and sustainable for generations to come.
“Government has embarked on various flagship programmes that include afforestation programme in 11 frontline states funded by the N150 billion green bond programme to fight drought and desertification and also assist in implementation of the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC),” he said.
