Turkey convened an extraordinary meeting of the Organization for Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to address the consequences of the terrorist attack in New Zealand, diplomatic sources announced Thursday.

Turkey, as President of the OIC Summit, called an emergency meeting to discuss the escalation of violence based on Islamophobia, racism and xenophobia, particularly after the terrorist attack on two mosques in New Zealand on March 15, 2019’, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

It added that the ministerial meeting of the OIC Open Executive Committee will be held Friday in Istanbul, will be chaired by Foreign Minister Mevlüt Cavusoglu, and several international organizations will attend, including the United Nations, the European Union and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).

At least 50 Muslims were killed on March 15 when a terrorist opened fire on believers during a weekly Friday prayer at Al Noor and Linwood mosques in the New Zealand city of Christchurch.
