The association said that nothing was being done by the Federal Government as Ogoni people continue to die as a result of the degradation of their communities by the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) while the oil giant continues to dodge its responsibility.
MOSOP President, Legborsi Pyagbara said this at a seminar in Bori, Khana Local Government Area, Rivers State to mark three years of the release of UNEP Report.
He said while the Federal Government has raised billions of naira to fight terrorism and support its victims, the Ogonis remain neglected in face of deaths and misery.
“In saner environments, the Ogoni environmental crisis would have forced the government to declare a state of emergency on the Ooni environment, but here our lives do not count…” he said.
However, the Federal Government yesterday said it will hold a meeting with the Ogoni elders and community leaders tomorrow on the implementation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) report on Ogoni land.
According to a statement issued by the Director of Information, Public Relations of the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, Kingsley Agha, the Petroleum Resources Minister, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke has mandated the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Danladi Kifasi to open a dialogue with the Ogoni People to fashion out modalities for the implementation of the report.
The UNEP, at the request of Nigeria, conducted an independent assessment of the environment and public health impacts of oil contamination in Ogoni land three years ago. The report was released on August 4, 2011.
Part of its recommendations was for a committee to be constituted by the federal government to over seethe process of remediation and restoration of Ogoniland in addition to the establishment OF a fund with an initial sum of $1billion by Shell and the federal government.
