The home-based Super Eagles have said their target is to surpass the feat achieved by the team at the last edition of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in South Africa where Nigeria came third.
Abia Warriors star Austin Oboroakpo told Trust Daily after the team’s training yesterday in Abuja that the players are aiming at improving on the success of the country in the championship when hostilities begin in Kigali, Rwanda.
He said though the team is aiming at winning the tournament, there was no pressure on the players to perform.
The captain and most influential player in the team, Gbolahan Salami dumped the Eagles to seek greener pastures in Europe but Oboroakpo is optimistic that the other strikers in the team are capable of delivering the goods.
“First of all, we need to put God first in anything we do. Our main target is to surpass the record set by the previous home-based Super Eagles at the competition. Everything is possible with God and with our hardwork and dedication,” the Abia Warriors player noted.
Nigeria beat Zimbabwe 1-0 in the third place match to earn a bronze medal in the last edition having lost 4-1 on penalties to Ghana in the semi-finals.
On his part, Sunshine Stars forward Tunde Adeniji said the team is improving every day, expressing optimism that it could only get better.
The CHAN Eagles are billed to fly out to South Africa tomorrow for the second phase of camping ahead of the Championship.
Coach Salisu Yusuf has been in charge of the team in the absence of head coach Sunday Oliseh who will join the team in South Africa to perfect their tactics going into the championship.
